Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease which most often appears as raised, red patches or lesions covered with a whitish buildup of skin cells.
Psoriasis can appear on any part of the body and is not contagious. It can be triggered by stimulants such as stress, damage to the skin like through sunburn or scratches and certain medications. Things like allergies, dry weather and diet are also thought to influence psoriasis in some individuals.
Psoriasis has been diagnosed in approximately 4.5 million American adults.
About 10 to 30 percent of people with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis, which causes pain, stiffness and swelling in and around the joints.
