Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. These breakages typically occur in the hip, spine or wrist.

Osteoporosis affects an estimated 10 million people with another 34 million people at increased risk for the disease. Women are four times more likely than men to develop the disease, but it does affect men as well.
