Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Although the symptoms vary from person-to-person, feeling “down” for more than two weeks is one indicator of clinical depression.

Depression is often characterized by feelings of sadness, fatigue, apathy and lethargy.  A change in eating and sleeping habits may also be an indicator of depression.

Causes of depression include heredity, trauma, stress and medical conditions.
The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that in any one year, 1-year period, 9.5 percent of the population, or about 18.8 million Americans suffer from depressive conditions.

Depression is a treatable illness which can respond well to a variety of different drugs and therapies. Without treatment, depression can last for weeks or even months.
