Breast cancer is a type of cancer where cells in the breast divide and grow abnormally.

The disease occurs mostly in women, but can occur in men as well. Cancerous tumors in the breast usually grow very slowly so that by the time one is large enough to be felt as a lump, it may have been growing for as long as ten years.

Cancer is always caused by a genetic abnormality, less than 10 per cent of cancers are inherited. The majority are caused by genetic abnormalities as a result of the aging process.

In 2006, the American Cancer Society estimates about 214,640 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 41,430 Americans will die from it.
